A personal appeal from Glyn Madden at Yamaha Club

Japan Tsunami Appeal

By now the whole world knows that the biggest earthquake on record to hit Japan has rocked the country causing widespread destruction and loss of life. A 10-metre high tsunami, triggered by the tremor, swept inland obliterating everything in its path.

We’ve all witnessed the devastating footage of ships, cars and whole buildings being tossed around as if they were toys. As I write many of the worst affected places are still inaccessible – so the death toll is, as yet unknown. Explosions in nuclear reactors have led to the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people.

Most of us who have worked in Japan have experienced one of the many tremors that regularly shake this country. For those who live there it’s an accepted, if unnerving, part of everyday life – but this is the one that everyone feared had to come one day and our hearts go out to the countless lives that have, and will continue to be affected.

Those who work closely with the staff at Yamaha, in the UK and elsewhere across the world, are affected by this disaster at a very personal level because we all have many friends living or working in Japan. Some have family members living there and, in this respect at least, we’ve been hugely relieved to hear that, so far, all are safe and well. The shock we all feel is undiminished though as we hear of the many thousands of families who are not so fortunate.

Can you help?

We tend to think of Japan as a wealthy and influential nation but the magnitude of this disaster is unprecedented and we appeal to everyone who can, to make a donation to one of the many appeals such as this one set up by the British Red Cross. Click to Donate via British Red Cross.

On behalf of all our friends, and their families – thank you!
