A workshop series for owners of the Tyros Arranger Keyboard.
Music Chef 01: Famous Names
Today our music chef’s registration recipes are based on musical ‘Famous Names’. The ‘recipes’ are easy to put together as they use only ingredients that are available from a Tyros5 as it is supplied new. As a bonus for Tyros5 owning subscribers, a complete bank of ‘Famous Names’ registrations is provided free to download during the two-month life of the magazine.

Music Chef 02: Tyros Latin
It’s summer and Carnival time, so we have a Latin American theme for today’s Music Chef registrations. The registrations were created using a Tyros5 but anyone with a keyboard that has the voices used in the settings will be able to adapt them to suit from these notes. Although I’ve only room to include four of my settings here I have created a full bank of eight registrations using Tyros5 (and added a few extra ‘tweaks’ for good measure). The full bank, compatible with Tyros5 and Genos keyboards, is available free to any subscriber to Yamaha Club during the June/July life of this magazine.

Music Chef 03: Tyros ’60s Volume 1
The 1960s gives our music chef his theme for today’s registration recipes. The ingredients are all available from a Tyros5 as it is supplied new so you don’t need a shopping list. And, as a bonus for Tyros5 owning subscribers, the complete bank of eight registrations is free to download during the August/September life of the magazine.

Music Chef 04: Vintage Organ Combo
Today we’re putting together a set of Vintage Organ Combo registrations that recall a time when the sound of the electronic organ was all ‘A-Gogo’. As a bonus for Tyros5 owning subscribers, the complete bank of eight registrations is free to download during the October/November life of the magazine.

Music Chef 05: A Tyros Christmas
Here’s a little selection of traditional Christmas favourites to create on your Tyros. As a bonus for Tyros5 owning subscribers, the complete bank of eight registrations is free to download during the December/January life of the magazine.

Music Chef 06: Instrumental Favourites
We know that the creators of the Music Finder records in Tyros instruments are restricted to the use of the One Touch Settings (OTS) for their choice of melody sounds. Today I’ve taken a few of my favourite instrumental tunes from the Music Finder and re-mixed the original OTS based registration to something perhaps better suited to the tune. As a bonus for Tyros5 owning subscribers, the complete bank of ‘Instrumental Favourites’ registrations is free to download during the February/March life of the magazine.

Music Chef 07: European Organ
(Visit Glyn Madden’s You Tube channel to hear him using these registrations in a live performance)
The ‘European Organ’ sound has been very popular on this side of the channel since the late 1970s when the Wersi organ first made its appearance here. Designed and built in Germany it emulated the ‘Hammond’ sound that had become associated with virtuoso organist Klaus Wunderlich via his multi-million record sales. Although it wasn’t quite ‘Hammond’ the Wersi drawbars produced their own unique sound which has been captured for our Yamaha instruments today. As a bonus for Tyros5 owning subscribers, the complete bank of ‘European Organ’ registrations is free to download during the April/May life of the magazine.

Music Chef 08: Versatile Brass
(Visit Glyn Madden’s You Tube channel to hear him using these registrations in a live performance)
The Tyros keyboard’s One Touch Settings (OTS) give us a lot of sound ideas for Big Band but sometimes none of them seem to quite fit the style you’re playing. I can’t promise that this one will either – but it’ll be another to add to your collection. It’s a versatile muted brass ensemble with a Harmony effect (so when you play a single note melody is sounds as though you’re playing chords). It’s great for light, fast pieces, or for those that swing along at a leisurely 120 bpm – so you’ll be able to use it for lots of tunes.

Music Chef 09: Film Themes 1
(Visit Glyn Madden’s You Tube channel to hear him using these registrations in a live performance)
The Easiest Keyboard Collection is another popular music book series for keyboard players. If anything I’d say the arrangements are possibly a little bit simpler than those in the Easy Keyboard Library we used before. I’ve not changed allegiance for that reason though… it’s purely to take advantage of a different, widely available repertoire. If you’re an accomplished player you can easily embellish the basic score – or find more advanced arrangements of the tunes we’ll be covering.

The piece of music I’ve based
my registration set on today is ‘As Long As He Needs Me’ the famous tear jerker from Lionel Bart’s wonderful musical, Oliver. As I often do, when working with Tyros O.S. instruments, I headed first of all towards the Music Finder list to see if the Yamaha crew had suggested a Style and OTS for this song… and they had… and, what’s more, they pretty much mirrored my own ideas for the song. So that’s where I’ll begin.
