Registration Builder (Genos)

Back to content list

The ‘Registration Builder’ series began in April 2019.
Registration Builder was originally intended as a vehicle for the Tyros range of keyboards and the first article, published in February 2019, used the Tyros5 as its illustrative model. From article no.2 onwards, however, Registration Builder was handed over to Genos whilst the established ‘Music Chef’ continued the original format for Tyros instruments.

Due to extensive coverage of the Genos v2.0 update which, I think you’ll agree, deserves the page space, there isn’t a Registration Builder workshop in this issue. I have, however, compiled a set of ‘Genos Christmas’ registrations and mp3 audio demos for those who would like a copy. The complete bank of ‘Genos Christmas’ registrations was free to download during the life of the December/January magazine.

I’ve had several requests for piano sounds recently so I’ve put together a set based on the styles of popular players with a (liberal) interpretation of their sound. Here are some ‘D.I.Y.’ instructions for those who like to know how the registrations are put together. The complete bank of ‘Acoustic Piano Moods’ registrations was free to download during the life of the February/March magazine.

It’s THAT sound again! What is it that keeps us returning to the ‘Glenn Miller’ theme time and time again – even though for the majority of us his popularity was at its height when our parents/grand-parents were young? The complete bank of ‘Miller Moods’ registrations was free to download during the life of the April/May magazine.

I’ve been in the loft again – going through the old organ records and I spent a nostalgic hour or two in the company of whoever recorded ‘Hammond and the Golden Hits’ . It was released in 1969 on the Fontana label and, although no artist is named I have a feeling it might have been the late, great Tony Back. If anyone knows… please do drop me a line.

The Easiest Keyboard Collection is another popular music book series for keyboard players. If anything I’d say the arrangements are possibly a little bit simpler than those in the Easy Keyboard Library we used before. That’s not the reason I’ve changed allegiance though… it’s really to take advantage of a different, widely available repertoire and, if you’re an accomplished player, you’ll easily be able to embellish the basic score – or find a more advanced arrangement. The first piece is a fabulous song from Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ called Circle of Life.

‘Seventy-six Trombones’ is the song I’ve chosen for today’s workshop and it’s one of twenty-two included in the ‘Easiest Keyboard Collection – Showstoppers’ music book published by Wise Publications. If you have a different copy (or play it by ear) that’s fine, the registration we’ll create will work just as well..

‘Last weekend I worked my way through every Style and One Touch Setting in my Genos keyboard – and it took ages! Along the way I found some styles that might offer an alternative accompaniment to well known Christmas songs and tunes (as a change from the keyboard’s specifically Christmas
themed ones) so I’ve included them here for you to try.

It’s February and love is in the air – or at least it might be if the would-be lovers could get out to meet someone! Never mind, let’s stay optimistic and dedicate this page to anyone who is in love, has been in love… or would like to be in love. Alternatively it might be the perfect time to put the kettle on for a nice cup of tea, a chocolate biscuit and a few good tunes.

There’s something about the sound of a musette accordion that, for some reason, always makes me think of France in the springtime. Maybe it’s just word association (‘April in Paris’), I don’t know, but it was certainly one of the factors that made me choose Michel Legrand’s gorgeous melody ‘I Will Wait For You’ as my theme for today’s article on registrations.

Although today’s song cropped up quite frequently in cartoons when I was young I’ve never known anything of it’s history and was surprised to learn that an early version of it’s lyrics dates back to the Granada War in the late 1400s. The version we have today, however, is non-political and appears to be more of a childrens’ nursery song.

In 1950 a piece of music played on the zither topped the international music chart… It’s title ‘The Third Man Theme’ announced the name of a film that in 1999, almost fifty years later, was to be voted the greatest British film of all time. It was set in post-war Vienna at the start of the Cold War and starred Orson Wells as the story’s central character, Harry Lime.

Registration Builder 17: Waltzes
There is something about Scotland that gets into your blood. In the 1980s and early ‘90s I spent some very happy times touring the country on behalf of Yamaha and at one time I felt that I could have happily retired there. You only have to look at Richard McBower to see the effect the place can have on Yorkshiremen like us! It must have stirred the same feelings in ex-Beatle Sir Paul McCartney as he fell in love with the place in the 1960s and, in 1977, immortalised the Mull of Kintyre in a hit song that became the first single to sell over two million copies in the UK.

Registration Builder 18: Country Songs
In 1970 Anne Murray had a hit with a little Country song called Snowbird that won her ‘Best New Artist’ and ‘Best Contemporary Vocal Performance’. Four years later it was also the first tune that I can remember broadcasting (on a Hammond organ) for BBC Radio Sheffield. Happy days.
